Ethereum’s highly anticipated upgrade has encountered another obstacle, this time on the Sepolia testnet.
Tim Beiko, responsible for the support of the protocol of the Ethereum Foundation, revealed the last complication in an article on March 5 on X.
He explained that the problem stems from a personalized deposit contract on Sepolia, which disturbed certain customers of the execution layer (EL). Dysfunction affected transactions in the blocks.
According to him:
“We are investigating a problem caused by the personalized deposit contract on Sepolia. This has made some customers EL have problems, including block transactions. »»
Emiliano Bonassi, responsible for the product of the crypto infrastructure company, corroborated this development, revealing that he observed that the network propagated empty blocks – another indication of technical instability.
In particular, this setback emerged less than two hours after Beiko announced that Pectra had been successfully finalized on Sepolia.
Sepolia is a crucial test field for Ethereum upgrades, simulating the conditions of the real network. This Testnet deployment was to be the last major step before upgrading the Pectra upgrade.
However, given the latest technical problems, the calendar for the launch of Mainnet – very planned for next month – remains uncertain.
Pectra challenges
Pectra is considered a most ambitious hard fork in Ethereum and is designed to improve the experiences of developers and users.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time that Pectra has faced complications. The Holesky Testnet has recently experienced problems due to incorrect deposit contract addresses, leading to chain divisions and a delayed purpose.
While the developers acted quickly to solve the problem, stabilization efforts are still underway.
Commenting on the broader implications of these test problems, Christine Kim, researcher of Galaxy Digital, noted that the growing ecosystem of Ethereum could prolong the time required for future improvements as guaranteing that a smooth transition becomes more and more complex.
Kim said:
“It is important that the Ethereum ecosystem is ready for the upgrading of Pectra and has the adequate test infrastructure to ensure a smooth transition through the hard fork. The more important the ecosystem of the ETH, the more time it can take in Ethereum to upgrade in complete safety. »»
