Web3 Media President Chris Lyons is constantly looking for “what’s next” in technology. In the latest episode of Financial Freestyle with Ross Mac, Lyons sits down with Mac to discuss the future of blockchain and Web3.
Lyons got his start in the music industry, then used his music engineering background to move into the world of technology. He says his musical background helps him get an idea of future trends.
“At the end of the day… the things we use every day, from Uber (UBER) to… Airbnb (ABNB), you know, even Google (GOOG, GOOGL) in its early days.”, all these ideas sounded like terrible ideas when they were published, right?” says Lyons, who is also a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz. He notes that the founders of these companies were forward-thinking enough to pursue their ideas despite reluctance.
Lyons believes that blockchain and Web3 will inform the next wave of such companies. He defines blockchain as “a computer system that actually verifies ownership,” saying it is “like a computer built on the Internet…that now operates in its own ecosystem.”
He states that there have been three eras of the Internet until now: Web1, Web2 and Web3. Web1 is the era of reading, Web2 is the era of writing, and Web3 allows users to read, write, and own their content on the Internet. Blockchain technology makes Web3 possible.
Lyon sees this property as the future of the Internet. “We’re still in all these systems that create centralized ownership. And I think the only real way forward is, you know, decentralization and blockchain,” he says.
In the future, Lyons believes that users will no longer need to think about the behind-the-scenes workings of blockchain, Web3 or AI. These new technologies will be integrated into user-friendly applications, in the same way that applications currently use GPS. He says that even NFTs won’t necessarily be considered “NFTs”:
“These are all technical terms that will eventually fall by the wayside because people will just want to be able to use…the benefits of technology.”
