The Indian city of Ahmedabad is modernizing by seeking technology partners to develop a blockchain-based system for document management.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) aims to develop a blockchain-based system to improve the management of key documents including birth certificates, death certificates and fire no-objection certificates (NOCs). The main objective of this programme is to phase out outdated manual processes that have long hampered efficiency and trust in document verification.
The new blockchain-based system will improve the authenticity and security of documents, especially for transactions involving transferable development rights (TDRs), which are often complex.
The decentralized nature of blockchain will also reduce the risk of fraud and simplify operations, making it easier for users to access and verify documents. This could be particularly transformative for heritage properties in Ahmedabad, where TDR has been used for conservation and redevelopment initiatives.
AMC’s decision to leverage blockchain also includes plans to automate processes, securely authenticate users, and integrate historical records with modern digital documents. The move positions Ahmedabad as a pioneer in using cutting-edge technologies to improve municipal services, and can serve as a model for other cities in India.
With this project, Ahmedabad hopes to become a leader in the use of cutting-edge technologies for municipal operations, potentially serving as an example to other cities seeking to improve administrative transparency and efficiency.
