If money is not parts, invoices or even cryptocurrencies, what is it really? This is the question at the heart of the episode of this week of The Podcast Clear CryptoWhere the hosts Nathan Jeffay (Starkware) and Adrian Blust (Tonal Media) are seated with Bill Maurer, Dean of the UC Irvine School of Social Sciences and a leading anthropologist from finance.
Back at the start
“I usually start by returning to history and talking about case studies such as ancient Mesopotamia,” said Maurer.
He explained that leading to a conversation on blockchain or crypto, he underlines the emergence of society, and therefore the possible emergence of a monetary system. However, at the beginning, it was not a token, a coin or a ticket; It was not even something that was “handed through hand”.
He explains:
“What they had was a system developed to keep registers.”
To maure, this is the key to understanding both the old savings and digital currencies today: “Money is essentially a way to commemorate credits and debts, and that’s all that has ever been.”

The role of Bitcoin
While bitcoin is often treated as a new form of digital money or even praised as the new “digital gold”, Maurer defies this point of view:
“Even if the Bitcoin system acknowledges that money is a file holding operation, it is always stuck in the idea that it is money in the form of something like a room.”
Maurer considers this as a missed opportunity. “It can be a completely different set of relationships around data and value without having to summarize it by considering it as money,” he said. “You would call this in a way of rights over a part of a large book which always takes place in the future in time.”
The conversation also explores what blockchain reveals about how humans organize confidence. “We are relational creatures, not individual creatures,” said Maurer. “What the blockchain has promised is a way to create this type of frame, but also to do it decentralized.”
