The Russian digital ruble, the digital currency of the central bank of the country (CBDC), will finally be launched nationally on September 1, 2026, according to the Central Bank.
The central bank says that it expects the country’s largest commercial banks to start providing their customers with a full range of CBDC transaction options in September of next year.
Digital ruble deployment: can Moscow prevent new delays?
His previous statements on the issue seem to suggest that the central bank will follow up with an order so that smaller and regional banks can follow suit in September 2027.
Digital friction was to be launched on July 1 of this year. But the central bank suddenly postponed the “indefinitely” launch in early March. The bank stunned the public when it has initially given any alternative launching calendar.
This led to a wave of speculation that Moscow was preparing to abandon his CBDC. Others suggested that Moscow could push the deployment at least 2027.
Some have planned that the central bank would continue alternatives to cryptocurrency in digital ruble. They cited a lukewarm reception for public friction plans for the public and the banking sector.
However, the Russian news agency managed by the TASS state reported that some of the country’s largest banks were looking forward to the launch.

A VTB spokesperson said the Megabank was already technologically prepared for deployment. Sovcombank, on the other hand, said that it would be “completely ready” for customers to carry out digital friction transactions before the central bank deadline.
The two banks are currently working with Moscow on the current digital ruble pilot. VTB said that “as the first bank to join the pilot project”, it was “technologically ready” for the launch. He added:
“We are interested in giving our customers access to the latest financial instruments as soon as possible. We are expecting a launch of digital rubles in large range for Russian citizens. ”
Legislation heads to the Douma State
The Central Bank says it has sent a bill to the Duma State. He hopes to quickly devote his requests to the banking sector in Russian law.
Legislators have previously said that the Russian CBDC would be interoperable with digital currencies issued by other member states of the BRICS.
Some have said that it would be used in the cross -border commercial sector, where Russian merchants will help avoid sanctions regimes.
But criticisms say that the play can violate citizens’ privacy rights. They also complain that digital friction will be difficult to use in more distant parts of Russia, where Internet connectivity is often unstable.
